Product: 2018 Topps Baseball – Series Two – Target Blaster
I was able to get a blaster of this at Target and went in hunting for a short print of Torres or Acuna, came away with a Derek Jeter Legend SP. I can’t complain for the flagship product.
Again, I always hate the cardstock for this stuff, too flimsy, but it is what it is. The flagship base product has been including some great photography, I liked the team photos or at least the more candid photos of some of the stars of the game.
If you can get a hold of a blaster or more in retail, it is a cheaper way to get your hands on the stuff, always a fun rip in hobby or retail. Enjoy it, then get out and see a game live and in person.
Product: 2018 Bowman Baseball – Mega Box (Target Exclusive)
Like a lot of other in the hobby, I did my hunting at many Targets in my area and not only did I search up front with the cards in their normal spot, there was word that the cards were near end caps in the toy aisle, or even in the grocery aisle at different stores. Great move Target, getting me to walk the whole store on my hunt. Also, if I had a fitbit, I would have racked up even more steps.
I never did find any boxes, but thankfully, I have people willing to help me out.
I want to thank Brad, @dailywaxcards (give him a follow!) and maker of sortsof.com, download the sortsof (iphone|android) app for your phone today.
He did get me two boxes, one you see in the video above, the second box had these two beauties.
The Ohtani chase got a hold of me and the hobby box prices were skyrocketing so fast, retail was definitely the only way I was going to get any of this product to do a review. As you saw in the video above, I was lucky enough to pull an auto. Whether Aaron Knapp will be good or not, I don’t know. I will have to hit MLB.com and other sites to get a look into how the kid is doing. I still can’t believe I hit an auto. Oh and I also couldn’t believe I didn’t hit an Ohtani base.
Side note: I opened 5 total blasters including this one for the review. I hit a color parallel paper auto and one of the tough Big League Breakthrough redemption cards. Check the photo below.
I wasn’t able to get my hands on this product to bust for a video but I did take part in a couple breaks. I was also able to watch case breaks and watch the excitement from collectors, breakers, and flippers.
The excitement this year is busting baseball to chase Shohei Ohtani, the breakout star for the Los Angeles Angels, who is a dual threat and is being compared to Babe Ruth.
Watching cases of this, I can tell the cards are the standard card stock that has a texture, there are framed cards, the aurora insert is back, there are many other insert sets and from my observation, more than one Ohtani variation in each box.
For those chasing and flipping, I don’t know what kind of value will be had on ebay, or any other marketplace to sell your cards after busting packs.
Outside of the chase, I did see some great cards, the design is just as we have come to expect from Diamond Kings through the last few years, the price is right and will lead to a lot of the product being opened. I enjoy the chase for the cut autos, the patch auto cards, and the legendary players on the checklist.
If I hit an Ohtani auto or relic, cool. I will chalk it up to pure luck. I have seen some other cool cards, yeah, I did see a Private Signings of Ohtani, but I also saw a one of one patch of Mark McGwire and a one of one patch auto of Mariano Rivera. Both from different breakers, but man were those cards cool.
Get in while the gettin’ is good! Have fun, at this price it is fun and can bring some hefty rewards if you choose to sell.
Let me introduce you to Giuseppe. He is the 17th Guitar crafted by Rodney Green by Green Geetars (@GreenGeetars).
Panini National Treasures a premier product name from Panini for years. It brings excitement when we as collectors get to cut through the tape seal on the front of the box, and as we open the box, we hear the all to familiar pop of the seal on the back side of the box, and then… well and then, we get hit with the smell of the box. Man, what an awesome experience it is.
After opening boxes of this product, I always had crazy ideas for a second life, but the boxes would be stacked and use to store some pc cards, or given to my son and other kids in the neighborhood as a container for their cards.
A few months ago, a friend of mine asked me to like a page her husband started on Facebook, Rodney’s Cigar Box Geetars. I stopped by the page and knew right there, these boxes I had stacked up and collecting dust, were meant for a second life. Bringing more great experiences past what their life was for the sports card hobby.
I got a hold of Rodney and we talked about his process in a quick excited and passionate pace. I could see that he was just as excited about creating something with these boxes. We threw around ideas for a few days, I sent him photos of National Treasures Baseball Cards with bat barrels and knobs. I then got the idea to get a Louisville slugger to him to use in the design of the guitars.
I really left Rodney to go through the creative process alone for the most part. As another creative, I could see his passion and excitement and rather than taint it, I was doing my best to just add some by making decisions on items he wanted my input on. I knew 100%, he was going to create something beautiful.
I met with Rodney to discuss some final decisions and when I saw Giuseppe… I was blown away. I had let him know that the company, Panini America, was part of Panini, an Italian company. Why is that significant? His wife is Italian. I thought it would be a little cool tidbit for him. Little did I know he would do more homework on the company and with that info added the Panini laser etched logo on the fret board and the name… Well the name is of Panini Group‘s original founder, Giuseppe Panini.
I hope that Panini America will enjoy seeing something they work hard on, enjoying a second life as playable art.
I really hope they do because I sent Giuseppe to them! 😀
If you are reading this and wondering why I did this…
When I got back into the hobby around 2011 – 2012, I was looking for something myself and my son Jaxson could do together. He has since moved on to video games, but when he was into sportscards, we met Tracy and then Scott at the National Sports Collectors Convention. We met them once. Since then Tracy and Scott never fail to ask about myself and Jaxson. How cool is that right? So, it isn’t for any cards, or anything material. For me, it’s about the people.
PS, I have a twin to Giuseppe, the 16th guitar by Green Geetars. Also known as Giuseppe… 🙂 I will be posting videos of me playing soon here and on YouTube.
For now… Here is Rodney Green from Green Geetars doing a sound check:
I have been hooked on this product since 2012. I have been working on base sets on each year since then. I haven’t even finished the base set of 2012 and I need to just get that done.
So what do I like about it? Well, I am sure by now you can guess, I like the feel of these cards, the cardstock is nice and thick, and the look and feel? Forget about it. I love the stylized look of these. I know I saw some early comments on other sites about people not liking the product design, but I am and always will be a fan. I liken it to Topps Magic, so I am glad this product line hasn’t disappeared.
Topps if you see this, keep this product line going.
If you are a fan of this product you will also have noticed the missing mini card boxes. I am on the fence about this set not being a part of the product this year. They were a pain to deal with and trying to build a set of those, good luck. I am sure some have done it, but I was not ready to fork over the money to do it. I guess, I am okay with dropping it.
The tarot cards, I will have likely mentioned it in the video above, I like this set and will be looking for lots for sale on ebay. I have tried to get some already, only to be outbid. I hope I can get this set done soon, maybe after the initial release excitement dies down, I may be able to get a deal on them then. Wish me luck.
Let me know what you think of the set by leaving your comment below, in the meantime, check out the helpful info below.
If you are a baseball collector, you know that there is a specific product everyone is buying and is THE brand of card to get when prospecting.
Well, this is what Panini Contenders is to the NFL sports card market.
I have a good time opening this product every year as there are some player autos you will hit that you never expected, some of players you never heard of. Plus of that, if that player does have a great career, there is a possibility you could be sitting on a future boom. If not, maybe it will be of a player from your Alma Mater, on your favorite team, from your hometown, or maybe is a player you can trade with friends and enjoy the hobby.
I like all of the inserts like the Legendary set that highlights players from the HOF or possible first ballot HOF’ers. Or Round Numbers, which highlight a pair of players, rookies and or vets, they leave ya wondering what’s up with that, and flipping the card over for more details, or hitting Google to find out information I was not aware of.
If you watched the video above and kept count, we only hit 4 autos in all, the box says there are at least 5 autos per box on average. Even with that, we did well in my opinion. Check the video out, speed through it if you have to, just have fun watching and comment on this post and let me know what you think!
If you have followed me starting this site with Layton Sports Cards and then ending breaks and doing product reviews on my own, the year has been quite a ride.
As the year ends, I want again thank everyone that allowed me to break boxes, or joined a break I did. I appreciate you choosing to do business with me and I hope you had fun whether you got a hit or not.
I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family, friends, loved ones, or just people you want to be around.
If you don’t celebrate Christmas, I hope that the holiday you do celebrate is a great one!
Well, no video this time as I opened some boxes of this at The Card Shop here in Omaha.
It was an interesting break as my first pack had 2 Rookie Silhouette Jersey Autos of OJ Howard, in the same pack, one right after the other… Not to be dissuaded, I opened more boxes. I have to tell you I hit some great cards but man, there was no way I was getting back what I spent on the box.
Here are the hits of note in no particular order.
3 Color Jumbo Patch Auto Silhouette of Doug Baldwin 06/10
1/1 Printing Plate Auto of Tony Dorsett (Magenta Plate) Sticker Auto
Ted Hendricks 1 of 1 Signatures
Christian McCaffrey Great X-pectations Rookie Auto Purple Parallel 06/10
Morten Andersen 3/5 Prominent Scripts Emerald
Dede Westbrook Great X-pectations Rookie Auto Gold Parallel 5/5
Jason Witten Preferred Penmanship Red Parallel Auto
I am like many others, I love this product. I was chasing any first rounder autos and look forward each year to send it off for grading. This product is by far, THE product to get, get graded, then sit and wait for the prospect to go off in the pros. Gamble/Investment…
I love the chrome, the base is just the same as the flagship Topps set, pretty thin and quickly damaged on corners with the breeze that goes by.
The Jumbo Hobby boxes are the way to go to get an Orange Refractor, but I have seen more of the SuperFractors hit from the Super Jumbo Hobby boxes.
Get out there and get in on this fun if you are a baseball fan. There are a lot of opportunities to get a big hit that may payoff down the line, or you can get a hit of a player from your home town, or one that you will follow because they were drafted by your team.
So Topps has found a way to modify their base set to get me to buy again… I am a sucker… ha.
I stopped by Walmart and saw a box with snowflakes and without much hesitation, I dove right in and got this box. Apologies, it seems I need to reset my recordings and fix the audio. Not sure what happened there.
At any rate, the card set is what you would expect as it is the flagship Topps set with the added snowflake holiday design with parallels in different “ugly sweater” colored border parallels and a metallic snowflake glitter bling.
There is a promise of one hit a box and I was surprised by the Rizzo relic, the card was thick but I was caught off guard. Look for gold 1/1 parallels, Frosty, Santa, and Rudolph!
A fun rip for a product that experienced an epic season of collecting and the games themselves.
Get out to Walmart, grab a box and enjoy this set for yourself, good luck with your hits!
High Tek has never been a fun product for me to open as I get lost looking at the patterns and trying to figure out if I have something rare or not. On the flip side, some of the patterns are cool no matter what and if one of my favorite players is on it then who cares about value, it will just be a stinkin’ cool card to own.
I do like the upping of 40 cards per pack with 2 on card autos and if you hit a redemption card, it is for a bonus auto.
The thing I noticed and I always look for with acetate cards is scuffing from the printing process. I found a couple during the video. I am hopeful that the ones I might flip on ebay don’t have roller marks…
At any rate, it was a fun break for me because of the fat pack and the promise of so many cards. Some great patterns and a great baseball season have made collecting very fun!
As per the usual, the cards are the same thickness. Also, as expected the big chase is the Young Gun set. There is a promise of 6 Young Guns per box, regular or canvas. I did get the prescribed amount. Did I hit a huge one? I can’t say. I know Nico Hischier is in this and being the top pick, I am sure he will rule the nest as far as sales go.
I really like the canvas cards, my favorite ones by far, the photos are awesome and the treatment of them is something I enjoy. The colors are amped up a bit and look like a painting.
There are also the high gloss and exclusives that people look for we did hit one in the video above. I think these are all a part of the chase and one of the many fun reasons to open this product.
I hope you enjoy your experience opening this product!
Product: 2017 Topps Archive Signature Series Post Season Baseball
I watched quite of few breaks of this stuff. Along with the big sell sheet hits, there are definitely some stretches for names in this product. In fact, I didn’t know the player I pulled an auto of in the video above.
That doesn’t really mean much. LOL.
What I do like about this product is having the opportunity to pull autos of a player I do know and remember and that the cards are already in a one touch and I can put it right into my PC.
I can’t keep up with all the releases, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do a review right?
I was able to get into a break and do a few personal boxes of my favorite baseball product year to year. What do I like about this product? I love the thick stock, the slight changes to the design, the chase for huge deca books, white whales, and triple relic autos.
The design was kicked up a notch this year with more of that holofoil base cards with some colored parallels, like emerald, sapphire, amber, onyx, gold, wood, ruby, and white whale
I also love the books and fun great patches. Mind you there are still some “napkins” as John would say from Sports Card Investors. That would be the only real disappointing this about this set.
If the price were to drop I think this set would have more legs and command great money after the first few weeks of release. It was followed rather quickly by Bowman Chrome and the market just deflated. That and the product did have a lot of redemptions. So much so, when you saw one you knew you were likely to land a huge hit… that isn’t true everytime but a lot of the decabooks were redemptions.
Here is a picture of a couple hits that were crazy.
Jaxson and I want to send a shoutout and thank you to @GeDannyS for this hobby box. Jaxson and I shared the opening, I know I should have let Jaxson do it all, but I had to get in on the fun. #BadDad
We both liked all of the insert sets and that you receive them in each pack. Jaxson is a fan of the Old School Colors and after thinking about it, I am too. The card stock is rather thin but the designs highlighted by some foil, cracked ice, or other parallel is really nice.
We hope you enjoy the video review and thanks for stopping by.

This was a break just to see if I could find some magic in a blaster from WalMart. I didn’t get a hit but I did get a lot of great cards. Oh and if you are wondering, “What the heck is Heritage High Number?” Well, it is the update set for Heritage. Like Topps flagship, this set has an update and that is what it is all about, you get to pick up rookie cards of late season call ups which makes this set desirable in and of itself.
This is a set builders product which I don’t consider myself to be. However, I am a fan of old school cards and this set brings back some memories. I wasn’t around when the original 1968 set was done, but I was around when the card stock of these cards was used.
I am a geek about the card stock and this is like you remember it, you can feel the fibers of the cardboard and it is thick. Makes you feel like you can put them in your bike spokes now and boom, you have a dirt bike/motorcycle for the day.
I did rather well, pulling about 4 shortprints. Nothing that will set the world on fire, but hey, I am sure I have some set builders that would be interested in picking up the cards.
Because this set brings back memories and is reminiscent of what the hobby used to be, for collectors, I have to LOVE this product.
Finally, thanks to Tony from All Star Case Breaks, I got my hands on some Bowman Mega Boxes and I was ready to go hunting for Shohei Otani.
Tony opened a few boxes live on his twitter feed and we were both hoping for a couple things. 1, he would pull a Shohei Otani, and 2, he would pull a colored refractor auto of someone. Tony didn’t get anything huge and we begun to talk about how the big hits were in the three boxes he picked up for me.
Well, after watching the video above – SPOILER – I did indeed hit an Otani and a few colored refractors, including a green refractor auto.
It hurt to send him photos of the pulls, but I did… Thanks again Tony for the hook up and I am sorry I got the pulls.
The design of the Mega Box refractors are super cool and The Rookies insert set, is sneaky cool in how the pattern is subtle and when you see it, it is a great surprise and looks awesome in person. I would love to see this refractor pattern in the hobby release and I look forward to it next year. I am sure it will be another retail exclusive… lol.
Spectra has had its ups and downs with the collector base for the few years it has been out. With the buy-in so high, most collectors and gamblers are looking at the over/under on getting a PC hit or making most of their money back. If you are going to get into a box, though, get ready for some great quality cards and a chance at some hits that look spectacular in hand.
I like the fact that you are no longer opening a single box when you get into the initial packaging this year. There are four packs and each one is thick and gives you a good feeling that there is going to be hobby goodness in each and every pack.
I expected to see the Neon Blues and Greens, and more and I had hopes for a gold vinyl 1/1. I wasn’t disappointed.
If you watched the video above you were treated to some great cards, Radiant Rookie Patch Autos that look great and I love the vertical patches, they are just different enough to set them apart from the RPA of which I did pull a Neon Blue Dalvin Cook, the Rookie Phenom from the Minnesota Vikings. I love the look of the true Rookie Patch Autos. I loved the colored ink too.
The base cards are no joke too. The same stock and acetate are used, with all of the parallels in play. I really do like the look of this stuff.
I like to think of it as PRIZM and SELECT on steroids… maybe that is a bad thing? I like it though… so for me, I like having the eye candy.
I hope you enjoyed the vid and quick review, check the details below.
Just when I had given up on hockey, I see a product like this and it sucked me right back in again.
I have to be honest, I was never a hockey fan until Panini dropped Prime Hockey on us. I believe Karvin Cheung, now with GTS, was the mastermind behind the product. It was the patches. The patches sold me on hockey.
Being in Omaha, I knew a few Red Wings, Senators, Penguins, and Blackhawks fans. Of those, the Blackhawks drew me in and it was nice knowing that should I choose, I could actually get to see them play live.
Thus began my knowledge search on the game, the history of the franchise and the birth of a new hockey fan.
This set, got me excited by including some of the greatest patches I have seen. I would put it on par with what I had seen from The Cup in previous years.
The price point, whoa, a bit up there, but the cards are beautiful and I was not disappointed.
I hope you enjoy watching the video and when you can, pop a tin of this stuff, it is a good rip.
