I started collecting baseball cards back in 1986. At the time, I didn’t have a specific player or team that I wanted to collect, I was looking to build the set and pick up players who’s names I had heard on TV or on the radio.

I gravitated towards the Yankees, because of the greats that played for the team, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, the list goes on. I knew from talk at the shop, I should look for Don Mattingly. I still look to collect Yankees, I haven’t religiously followed them, but they are the baseball team I gravitate towards.

I stopped collecting in 1992. I had just graduated high school and was focused on saving money to put myself through college.

In 2004, my son Jaxson was born. I was always on the lookout for things he and I could do together and in 2010, I found a local shop here in Omaha, Nebraska. Jaxson and I stopped in and we had a good exchange with the owner. Before we left, the owner made sure Jaxson left with a bag full of football cards. Each time we stopped he greeted Jaxson with a handshake and smile and made Jaxson feel like he was part of the cool club.

Jaxson has since moved onto Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, Yugioh, and video games. I continue to collect all sorts of sports cards. I got hooked pulling autos, patches, and hits of players I remember collecting back in 1986 through 1992.
